THE RESEARCHER
Nadine’s interest was sparked when she reflected on one of her family elder's conversation patterns. The elder, when sharing a story, would often punctuate her narratives with proverbs for levity and emphasis. This unique storytelling method resonated with Nadine, prompting her to explore the cultural and historical significance of proverbs within Jamaican oral traditions.
Her research started during her pursuit of an MA in Illustration at Kingston University, where she focused on the Jamaican proverbs. This academic journey led her to The Jamaican Language Unit at the University of the West Indies, Jamaica, where she immersed herself further in her studies.
The culmination of her efforts resulted in the visual translation of selected proverbs, leading to the publication of her first book, Illustrated Jamaican Proverbs: Vol I. This picture book serves as the initial installment of her research, offering both an artistic and educational perspective on these traditional sayings.
Since the book's release, Nadine's exploration of Jamaican proverbs continues, as she seeks to deepen her understanding and broaden the visual language associated with this rich cultural heritage.
